In northern and western Europe, bog bodies are a common occurrence. Several hundred bodies have been discovered in peat bogs, mostly in Germany and Denmark, but there are also known cases in all the other northern and western European nations. It is challenging to think of all of these as representing any one specific cultural or chronological occurrence because many of them are little more than skeletons, pieces of skeletons, or scraps of clothing. Few of the human remains have undergone scientific investigation, and few have been saved for contemporary analysis. Even though some of the bog bodies date from between 700 B.C. and 100 A.D., there is a group that appears to paint a coherent and unified picture.
